The Mexican Spirits Gala is an event organized by AliasSmith AB in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico to thank and honour key decision-makers and other representatives from the HoReCa industry in Sweden for promoting and representing with excellence the gastronomic culture of Mexico.

This year’s event on December, 2nd, was hosted at the Embassy’s premises in Djursholm, and sponsored by AliasSmith AB with support of Arcus Sweden AB, José Cuervo, Barkonsult AB and Original Brands STHLM AB.

The highlight of the event was the diploma award ceremony in the categories: Restaurant of the Year, Newcomer Restaurant and Cantinero of the Year, in recognition for their effort in promoting truly Mexican food and drink in Sweden by utilising essential recipes and techniques for authentic Mexican cooking and mixology.

On this occasion, the Mexican restaurant Mexikanska Monarkin in Gothenburg, was awarded Restaurant of the Year 2019, and the New Mexican restaurant Chelas in Stockholm won Newcomer Restaurant of the Year. Josephine Sondlo from Indio Kitchen at Rio Bio was recognized as Cantinero of the Year 2019. “The Embassy is open for cooperation with the HoReCa industry in Sweden to promote Mexican cuisine and beverages. We are also keen on disseminating knowledge surrounding the culture of tequila and the other agave distillates”, said Claudia Keller Lapayre, Chargée d’affaires, a.i. of the Embassy of Mexico, and encouraged the people present to visit Mexico and create a memorable experience through its cuisine and beverages. The Embassy also acknowledged the Mexican National Chamber of Tequila Industry for its donation of high -quality products that were sampled during the event.

During the event, the guests had the opportunity to taste different kinds of Mexican Spirits such as Tequila, Mezcal, Sotol, Bacanora and Charanda, considered a gift from Mexico to the world.

Restaurant of the Year 2019

Mexican Spirits Gala – Restaurant of the Year is given to the restaurant that in a remarkable way has honored the true Mexican Gastronomical Spirit with great craftmanship.

The Restaurant of the year 2019 is given to: Mexikanska Monarkin

Mexikanska Monarkin became right after its opening 2015 one of the most beloved Mexican Restaurants among Göteborgeans and its reputation became quickly known all over Sweden. Here you can find not only great Mexican Spirits and food but also the Mexican design in every detail of the restaurant. The founders of Mexikanska Monarkin are crowning their project with another Mexican restaurant showing the way of Mexican fine dining and paving the way for more to come.

Newcommer of the Year 2019

Mexican Spirits Gala Newcomer of the year Award is given to that entrepreneur/Bar/Restaurant that surprised the industry with its positive presence pushing up the bar where high expectations for Mexican Spirits and Gastronomical Culture should be.

2019 Newcomer of the Year Award is given to: Chelas

From the very first day the restaurant opened its doors Chelas became a hit among hipsters as well as the Latino community from all over Stockholm, just within weeks the rumor of this newcomer had reached every foody fanatic in town and today it requires a typical Swedish spontaneity of two weeks anticipation to book a table. The menu is short but sure in aim, targeting the true flavor on México.

Chelas is a perfect Newcomer and Mexico look forward to see what this group creates the coming years.

Cantinero of the Year 2019

Mexican Spirts Gala – Cantinero of the year is that Bartender that shown extraordinary skills, devotion and passion for the Mexican Spirits and Gastronomy Culture.

2019 – Cantinero of the Year is given to: Josephine Sondlo, that during her 13 years in the industry have inspired and enchanted customers and bartenders about the true essence of Mexican Spirits. Josephine has written and published a book about Mezcal & Tequila, travelled to México three times and competed in several international Mixology Competitions. Josephine uses her platform to promote sustainability and is a perfect ambassador for the Mexican Spirits Industry and therefore rewarded Cantinero of the Year 2019

Masterclass

Born and raised in Milan, Italy, he learned the craft of making drinks and secrets of hospitality in London from 2000 through 2006. After a short stop in San Francisco CA he landed in Guadalajara MX in 2007 to start his agave and tequila quest. He is been there since. He now makes sure to advocate what Tequila Fortaleza does and how it does it, in various markets across the globe.

Due to a bilateral treaty between the European Union and the Mexican government in 2011, an initiative was taken and an investment was done with funds from the EU and Mexico to stimulate the growth of exports from Mexico to the EU. The investment was administrated by an entity called PROCEI (the Competitiveness and Innovation Project Mexico-EU), led by PROMEXICO, who invited five different sectors to participate. The spirits industry got its share of the investment and the National Chamber of the Tequila Industry (Camara Nacional de la Industria Tequilera, CNIT) administrated several initiatives such as various certification and energy optimization projects, all with the purpose to improve the competitiveness of the Mexican spirits industry and increase exports to Europe.

Agave Spirit Awards

The agave spirits industry is growing, rapidly, and every year there are more brands arriving to the shelves. In order to help consumers to find the tastiest products and due to the fact that there was no “A” Agave Spirits Competition that made difference between different categories or agave sorts, AliasSmith launched the Agave Spirits Award in 2014. The competition attracts the foremost experts in agave spirits to a few days long session of blind tastings. The Agave Spirits Awards is a periodic event. Next competition will be  in December 2018.

AliasSmith Expert Trips

During the last 10 years, AliasSmith has organized more than 30 expert trips to Mexico for professionals. The AliasSmith Expert Trips are for professionals in the spirits industry from all over Europe that want to gain a clear insight into the Mexican spirit and gastronomical wonder.

During our trips, that last between 12 – 14 days, we visit distilleries, plantations, the best bars and restaurants and the regulatory authorities. We meet with the foremost leaders of the industry and experience the phenomenal ambiance of Mexico. The AliasSmith Expert Trips are always composed by small groups in order to arrange close meetings with the brand owners and producers. The focus is knowledge and unique experiences opening doors few people know exist. The AliasSmith Expert Trips are ambitious and we cover several regions and cities in order to learn as much as possible about the different appellations of origin. A spirits’ expert is always leading the trip and making sure everybody gets out the best of the experience.
